Poor Brycie

Our little guy had an accident on Friday, October 30th. He is recovering, and long term will be most likely be okay, but is in a fair amount of pain now and really uncomfortable. On Friday evening we hosted Jack's schoolmates for a Halloween Party. The party was fun, and Bryce looked so cute in his little lion costume. Everyone had gone home. We were cleaning up and putting the kids to sleep. We had melted caramel in the crock pot to make caramel apples. We had an excess of caramel left over and we scrapped it into a pizza box to throw it out. I thought Marty was watching Bryce, and he thought I was. I didn't realize he was in the kitchen, even though I was only 3 feet away. Bryce got both hands into the burning hot caramel in the pizza box before I could stop him. We plunged his hands into cold water, but the caramel began to set. It caused severe (second degree) burning on his left hand, and some on his right hand as well. His fingers look disgusting (I will spare any with a light stomach a description).
We immediately drove Bryce to Children's Hospital. They checked us in and got him on some heavy duty pain meds. Then they transported us by ambulance to Harborview Hospital, to the area burn specialists. Bryce was admitted at 11:30 pm on Friday. We were discharged on Sunday afternoon. The hospital and staff were so kind. They treated Bryce like a little prince. They had toys and even a toy room with a fish tank. Sadly, we didn't get to participate in any Halloween festivities. Marty, Sarah and Bryce were in the hospital. Jack got to go trick or treating with our friends who watched him on Saturday and Sunday. Thanks Peters family!

The hardest part is the wound care we have to do. It is painful for Bryce and so difficult emotionally and physically. The biggest risks are infection, as he has healing wounds on both hands, and as you can imagine a toddler has no concept of hygiene.

Tonight was the first night cleaning and dressing his burns and it did not go well. We fumbled up some of the wrappings, and didn't do it as quickly as we should have. We are both having such a hard time putting him through so much pain. We hate that he is going through this because we weren't vigilant enough. As parents we are suppose to protect our children, and we have failed Bryce badly. Please say a prayer for our little boy!

We love you guys and are praying every day for quick healing and that you two don't beat yourselves up. Also that the wound dressing gets easier for you. Brycie WILL be completely alright. He looked like he was having fun in the hospital - I'm sure he enjoyed having you to himself. We love you all! The Starks
